Working in the heritage sector at a historic house gives one a completely different viewpoint when it comes to choosing housing design. Spacial awareness is something absolutely critical when it comes to all the new housing coming along these days. The rooms are necessarily smaller, everything is compact – for the reason that to house everyone who apparently wants to buy homes and live here, we need to conserve space. Rooms are built into the loft areas now – not always bedrooms but cinema rooms and walk in shower rooms. I love going round the old stately home. Seeing the rather odd priorities being displayed for us to mull over. The footmens’ bedrooms in the basement are so basic but they would have been the height of luxury in their day – for a servant that is.
